You’ll need to first activate Amiibo in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild as they aren’t activated by default, you need to set the game up to use them before you start loading items in. Start by opening your Inventory menu using Start (+) button. Next, make your way to the System tab. Click on Options. This will list a range of options for you to change and choose from.
Locate the amiibo option at the top of the list. It should initially state “Do Not Use”. Click on it to activate amiibo.
Since amiibo is activated now, open your Rune menu and change the current Rune on your Sheikah Slate. Scroll all the way to the right to locate the amiibo sign. Choose this and press the button to activate your Rune and line up the circle on a small flat patch of ground. Select the amiibo you want to use and hold it over the right stick on your Joy-con, or over the NFC area on your Wii U. This will spawn in the items available from the amiibo.
A few amiibo only give players items such as food or materials. These items are particularly useful if you want to learn how to cook in Breath of the Wild. Other amiibo, though unlock certain items that can only be gained by using those amiibo in game. Currently the two most specific options for amiibo-only content are the horse Epona, and a companion version of Wolf Link.
To get a hold of these special in-game items, players are required to find and scan in the appropriate amiibo. To get Epona, players have to scan in the Link amiibo from the Super Smash Bros. collection. To get Wolf Link, players have to buy and scan in the Wolf Link amiibo. These can be bought from different places such as Toys R’ Us, Amazon, etc.
