For almost an eternity, PlayStation gamers have been demanding the ability to change their PSN account names. Fast forward a few years and Sony is yet to satisfy this demand, although everything might just be about to change.
The patch notes for a recent update to Unreal Engine 4 mentions the PlayStation 4 SDK version 4.008.061, the updated software development kit the engine now supports.
Highlighted by a user on NeoGAF named Kirbasin, the page then goes on to say that Sony has updated its developer recommendations to allow users to be identified by their account ID instead of their Online ID.
The updates other functions also mention a switchover from the previous method of returning the online ID, to the new system that uses the account ID.
This may just mean that Sony is preparing to implement a name change feature of some kind, although it’s possible the update might just be referring to something else entirely.
Skimming past the notes, it apparently looks as if Sony is assigning IDs to all accounts which can’t be changed, and this is what games and the network will utilize to identify players. Account names though are not bound by this and therefore can be changed, or at least that’s what it looks like as of now.
What do you guys think? Do you believe that this is a possibility and would you like to see SONY make it a reality? Let us know in the comments section below.
