In a recent interview with GamesIndustry.biz , Sony’s Jim Ryan talked a bit about the PS4 Pro and how they had underestimated its demand.
Initially he says that they did not expect the PS4 Pro to sell this well , and this is what created a supply constraint in the first place. Now that the PS4 Pro is back in the market in a free supply capacity it will be interesting to see how it performs in the upcoming 3 or 4 months.
When asked if they would be competing with Microsoft now that they had their own 4K machine in the form of Xbox One X here is what he had to say.
“Talking about competitive plans is never a wise thing to do. Certainly, with 1 in 5 PS4s sold being a Pro, it is clearly going to be a really important part of the holiday season for us. And we anticipate that that proportion will grow. Sometimes when you ship and you’re supply constrained, you don’t want to talk about it too much because there’s nothing to sell. We anticipate we will be in a positive inventory situation this Christmas, and we will look forward to selling a lot of PS4 Pros.”
So it seems that despite the impending launch of Xbox One X Sony finds itself in a very good position in the market with regards to the PS4 Pro. It would be interesting to see how the two mid-cycle updates perform against each other come the holiday season.
While many will argue that the Xbox One X is going to be a big seller , I believe the PS4 Pro will still be hot on its heels simply because of the fact that Sony has better exclusives , and this will almost certainly help both the bas PS4 and the PS4 Pro.
