This holiday season Bethesda will be releasing two of its biggest games. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition and Dishonored 2 on October 28th and November 11 respectively, for the PS4, Xbox One and PC. Speaking to MCV UK Bethesda’s VP for Marketing and PR Pete Hines said that he believes that Skyrim will do a great job, while the company might need to invest more time in getting the general public to realize Dishonored 2’s potential.
With Dishonored 2 being the sequel to the game of the year, it is the biggest, most important thing we have. Even though I think Skyrim is going to do tremendously well, I don’t think we need to spend a whole lot of time explaining what that is.
But with Dishonored 2, we want to spend time highlighting the fact that it is not just the same game. We want to show that the team has been really ambitious.
Dishonored was the only new IP released in the 2012 holiday season, and it would be fair to say that it was indeed a smash hit. The game took after established entities such as the Thief series, but went a step further by offering a brand new dimension to its gameplay, such as the use of supernatural powers, and the ability to finish the game without killing anyone. This complemented the main story arc really well, and was one of the reasons why the original Dishonored was such a success.
However Pete Hines was quick to explain that Dishonored 2 is a different ball game altogether and we should not compare it with Skyrim’s potential.
“I don’t think someone like you would ever look at Dishonored 2 and say, ‘Absolutely, that is the same as Skyrim in terms of its potential.’ It is a different game from a different studio. It can still achieve enormous success and not be Skyrim,”
It will be interesting to see how Dishonored 2 performs during the Holiday season, and whether or not it can keep up The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition in terms of sales. Let us know whether you plan to buy one or both of the games come winter, by commenting in the comments section below.
