The PS4 has dominated the eight console generation largely with the help of amazing software. The console has gone on to sell in excess of 70.6 Million units and is on hand to touch the fabled 100 Million+ mark.

While we may talk about the stellar year that the Nintendo Switch has had or the beefed up Xbox One X, it is the PS4 which has maintained its position at the top of the mountain. Analyst’s believes that the momentum is going to continue in 2018 and beyond with the PS4 getting amazing exclusives such as God of War, The Last of US 2 and Days Gone amongst others.

IDC’s Lewis Ward believes that the PS4 will be able to hit the 100 Million mark by 2019 max. In a brief interview with GamingBolt the analyst explained that he believes that the console is bound to reach the 100 Million mark by 2019 or even sooner.

This generation we have seen a mid-cycle upgrade with the PS4 Pro and the Xbox One X which has changed the console life cycle. Hence it’s a break from tradition and raises the question of when are we going to see a PS5 or a new Xbox?

Ward believes that the consoles will come out somewhere around 2021. Here’s what he had to say

“Right now I think PS5 and the next-gen Xbox will arrive in 2021, but that’s really just a tentative placeholder in my forecast.”
While this is just mere speculation Ward’s prediction does make a lot of sense. While sales are  dwindling just a teensy bit, the PS4 is still the best selling console worldwide and it will take at the very least a couple of years before it will be time to hit the refresh button again. Sony has no need to talk about the future or the PS4’s successor while it’s still going strong.
