Wolfenstein II Multiplayer Will Shift Focus From Story; Says Writer

Wolfenstein II: A New Colossus is the most unusual entry in the lineup of video games for the year 2017 – While every single game is focusing on having multiplayer elements embedded somewhere between them, Wolfenstein II does the extraordinary be being a solely single-player shooter! And it pays off.

In an age where every shooter is plagued with a multiplayer mode, Bethesda chose to refine it’s story and put every all their efforts into making an enjoyable single-player experience. MachineGames’ response for going against the industry standards is that not including the multiplayer mode is what allowed them to make the story so desirable and fun.

“The only way we can create these super immersive narrative experiences is if we can solely focus on the single-player. Having a multiplayer component in this work process would just dilute it all. That’s the danger if you try to do two things at once.”, this is what Tommy Tordsson Björk (the narrative designer for Wolfenstein II) had to say.

Tommy also stated that the game is more linked to scripted games such as Uncharted or Tomb Raider rather than what it might seem as a shooter that’s comparable to Call of Duty or Overwatch:

“We call them action adventures rather than shooters, because we feel there’s so much more to them than just shooting. There are so many things you [haven’t seen yet]. We’re definitely pushing the limits, but at the same time continuing what makes Wolfenstein really special: the drama, the human relationships, with dark humor and violence. It’s pushing them all, on all fronts. […] To me, that’s the most interesting thing about working in games. Pushing the boundaries. Trying out things that we haven’t seen before. When you write for games, there are so many avenues that haven’t been explored.”

Wolfenstein II is going against so many trends right now and excelling at it, it might be the industry’s last hope at a future with enjoyable single-player focused games rather than a multiplayer (rather micro-transaction plagued time) revolution.

Wolfenstein II: A New Colossus comes out for the PS4, Xbox One and PC on October 27th so be sure to pick it up if you’re excited for it. Stay tuned for more on everything gaming!
