The Star Wars franchise is something that has gripped audiences forever. We watched the films with almost the same level of interest and intensity as we first did when the first installment came out all those years ago. But some may argue that the franchise may just be losing its steam and falling victim to the concept that we study in Economics as diminishing returns to scale.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi the latest installment in the Star Wars saga cashed in big at the box office. The movie managed to accumulate over $750 million in its opening days. The movie amassed $220 million domestically becoming the second highest opening of all time falling behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Internationally it garnered $450 million assuming the title of the fifth highest-grossing opening weekend of all-time at the worldwide box office. Despite the monumental earnings, there were some minor set backs that caused some concern.
The audience score is currently only 54% for the latest installment. While the earnings may overshadow the set back it might be a cause of concern for the franchise’s future. While many people have praised the film and have called it a masterpiece the audience score over at Rotten Tomatoes suggests otherwise. It is also indicative of the fact that the movie makers are bringing in little differentiation from the other films, making the audience feel bored at times.
Dave Hollis, the President of theatrical distribution at Walt Disney Studio had the following to say “Rian Johnson, the cast, and the Lucasfilm team have delivered an experience that is totally Star Wars yet at the same time fresh, unexpected and new. That makes this a Star Wars film like audiences have never seen – it’s got people talking, puzzling over its mysteries, and it’s a lot to take in, and we see that as all positive, that should help set the film up for great word-of-mouth and repeat viewing as we enter the lucrative holiday period.”
So while Star Wars: The Last Jedi may have garnered praise from a certain section of the community, it seems opinion remains divided on the latest installment in th elong running franchise.
