Despite the imminent arrival of Nintendo’s highly anticipated console the Nintendo Switch, the 3DS is still very much up and running. As a matter of fact, 3DS software sales just reached the 100 million mark in Japan since this console was released five years ago.
The 3DS can now proudly stand amongst the likes of the Nintendo DS and Sony’s Playstation 2, both the only other consoles to achieve this incredible feat.
One of the major factors behind the successful rise of the 3DS success has been the recent release of the latest iterations in the Pokémon Series; Pokémon Sun and Moon. The games have managed to sell around 2 million copies in the first three days in Japan. Although of course a lot of other games have previously sold millions of units.
Many fans were concerned that after the release of the Switch, Nintendo might begin to neglect the 3DS and stop developing 3DS games. Fortunately there seems to be nothing to fear.
Tatsumi Kimishima, the CEO of Nintendo, has stressed the fact that company will keep developing games for 3DS, and will keep going well into 2017.
Nintendo is still supporting this console because some of its main brands are on handheld console. Also there are still a few important games that are arriving on this console such as Poochy and Yoshi’s Woolly World, Ever Oasis, and Pikmin.
There was very little chance of Nintendo abandoning 3DS games development especially since Pokémon Sun and Moon, which are revolutionary games for the brand, were about to release. The 3DS also has plenty of active users.
